Island Christmas visiting 2013…..

Baking all last week was a stress. Too many clouds to produce enough power for our solar. Some of my breads turned out dry  =+(

However, now that that is done and the day was here I was very excited!!! Susan and I put together the plates and began our visit south. She had to stop at a Bahamian woman who bakes wonderful goodies and breads for her fruit cake. We then made our first stop at the Cartwrights, Delbert and Emma.

our first visit was with Delbert and Emma Cartwright....they have been married for 70 yrs this Dec 27th!!!

I love listening to Delbert’s stories and he recites poetry that he wrote many many years ago telling stories! Their family is well known- Larry was our island representative for many years (like our governor). I have enjoyed getting to know Larry’s wife- Ann at the farmers market on Saturdays lately! She loves her garden like me and would be in the yard more than in the house!  Larry’s brother Gary runs the local establishment we ll hang out on Friday happy hours-Midway Inn. Another son- Locksley, is a fisherman and loves to take others out on his boat to the unknown parts of the island!

We made many stops driving back north to friends, dropping our cookies off and wishing MERRY CHRISTMAS to all……it was past 1 when we realized we were hungry, we were having so much fun and there hadn’t been a quite moment in the car in between stops!

We just pulled off the road to this beach and enjoyed the breeze and our lunch I had prepared!

finally made our lunch stop....perfect setting!

We made stops at local business friends who were very surprised with our cookies. They serve us all the time and wanted to bless them! Even our very busy “Nurse Spense at our local clinic. (She was very very busy so we just dropped and left!)

Kayak Adventure Dec 2013……

…. mocking birds singing in the south window, roosters doing a duo out the north window…. morning has broken. Not a leaf is moving as there is no breeze and it’s chilly- 72 this morning! brrr…….However, windows and doors are still open all night but just have to pull the covers up around my neck for a few more minutes of snuggling. I LOVE late fall on our island…..just enough coolness to relax and enjoy the air! Be that as it may, I still have on my flip flops, sleeveless t-shirt, shorts but just a light jacket to keep the chill off!

Yesterday started out much the same way but by 10 it was 85 and HOT in the sun as we were pulling the kayaks out of the truck and into the mangroves for our adventure…..

We drove all the way to the north end of the island -about 40 minutes and put in our kayaks into the mangroves to paddle across the  lake while tide was flowing out and the breeze was just enough to cool us!

Christmas dinner, guests arrive, beach….preparing for party…CAVE PARTY!!!

….all in less than 1 week……whew! I am so behind…..too much fun here!

Christmas Day I woke to all the family pictures on Facebook and began to feel very lonely for my family! But we skyped with half of them and I began to feel better!  Later, for our Christmas to each other, John took me to a new, local restaurant north of us for dinner. The couple running Driftwood, as it is now called, are British and they wanted to have a traditional English Christmas dinner and kept it more family by only taking 20 reservations! PERFECT! (wouldn’t have to sit and try to get to know someone “how long you been coming to Long Island? How did you first come here….”!)

ISLAND CELEBRATIONS DEC 2013….

It always amazes me how resilient Long Islanders are…..we had a wonderful celebration Sunday afternoon dedicating St. Andrews Anglican church- newly restored and renovated! It could not have happened without the continued hard work, time, money and dedication of so many here!

Thankfully I have pictures from 2005, walking thru it with friends visiting before the roof was destroyed in many different hurricanes and became totally unusable!

Rainy day Dec 2013……

The promised cold front from the north arrived and just this morning we already have an inch and a half!!! I did get into the garden earlier this morning as I couldn’t do any baking because we weren’t making enough power and John needs to work on the generator. He is still cutting nails, caulking and painting the deck over hangs. He has 1 more section to do…….

He is watching the rain pour down the driveway making a ditch that he will have to rake over....AGAIN!! can't paint....too wet! See the 1 section left to do? YEAH!

He is watching the rain pour down the driveway making a ditch that he will have to rake over….AGAIN!! can’t paint….too wet! See the 1 section left to do? YEAH!

I had to transplant all my lettuces into another gutter, dig out the old dirt and make new. We brought in -what we thought was a good additive to our sandy soil here. I added to most of my pots and watched for a month them struggle to grow and many just gave it up and died! Finally I read the bag and it said “NOT FOR CONTAINERS- just to add to native soil” REALLY??!!! My lettuces really struggled so I tested a section and wella…..the seeds came up faster and are doing great. This was one of those jobs to do out of necessity sort of like fixing the generator and raking the drive of ruts! Island life isn’t all beach and fun in the sun you know!!!!

Have been baking cookies and breads for Christmas. I would rather be out in the garden but a friend and I will visit elderly on Monday all day and take our goodies. It is a wonderful day not only with my friend but meeting old and new friends and the stories they all tell…..I tried to take notes last year…..need a tape recorder!!! So stand by for that report next week!!!!

Holy Savior Church- Nov 2013

Our beloved island suffered thru 2 hurricanes in the past 2 years. The havoc reaped can still be seen while driving up and down the island. Many roofs have blue tarps on them and boards across windows. But the saddest effect that constantly reminds me of how much Mother Nature’s temper can hurt is our Anglican church north of us-Holy Savior. It is a very old, well worn church that needed repair before any of the storms but we still were able to have services inside the building.

the roof was old and in need of repair before the Hurricane Sandy destroyed it. The people of this small parish were trying to raise money for many years and now have even more work to do!

Today we had a wonderful blessing….we heard church service was to be held at 9:00 this morning at Holy Savior.

“WHAT??? How can that be? We just drove by it a day ago and the roof was still gone!”, we asked

No,” just before the church at the Millerton school house.”

In shock we told our friend, “That old, run down building no one uses? No way!”

This morning as we parked in the “lot”- the basketball court and yard- we were astonished to see this………
