Rainy day Dec 2013……

The promised cold front from the north arrived and just this morning we already have an inch and a half!!! I did get into the garden earlier this morning as I couldn’t do any baking because we weren’t making enough power and John needs to work on the generator. He is still cutting nails, caulking and painting the deck over hangs. He has 1 more section to do…….

He is watching the rain pour down the driveway making a ditch that he will have to rake over….AGAIN!! can’t paint….too wet! See the 1 section left to do? YEAH!

I had to transplant all my lettuces into another gutter, dig out the old dirt and make new. We brought in -what we thought was a good additive to our sandy soil here. I added to most of my pots and watched for a month them struggle to grow and many just gave it up and died! Finally I read the bag and it said “NOT FOR CONTAINERS- just to add to native soil” REALLY??!!! My lettuces really struggled so I tested a section and wella…..the seeds came up faster and are doing great. This was one of those jobs to do out of necessity sort of like fixing the generator and raking the drive of ruts! Island life isn’t all beach and fun in the sun you know!!!!

Have been baking cookies and breads for Christmas. I would rather be out in the garden but a friend and I will visit elderly on Monday all day and take our goodies. It is a wonderful day not only with my friend but meeting old and new friends and the stories they all tell…..I tried to take notes last year…..need a tape recorder!!! So stand by for that report next week!!!!

Have a bit of news from home…..our oldest grandson- Makz Novak returned from serving in Afghanistan and flew back to Ohio on Monday. They had a huge welcome home party for him and here are 2 pictures they sent us!!!!!! ………
